Frequently Asked Questions

When can I get involved?2024-01-26T10:20:59+00:00
  • We are setting up a fair, equitable, and legally protected system, protecting each of us and all of our commitments, which we continue to work on.
  • On our website you will be able to sign up with your interest via an initial small donation so please keep watching this space.
How are you going to create messages on the lunar surface and what challenges do you face?2024-01-26T10:21:02+00:00
  • We have numerous options and there are more we haven’t thought of yet. We can impress the dust with a type of roller equipped with a character set that can adapt to form words and messages. We can push the dust around with a rod or rake like device. We can build up lunar dust to provide an embossed effect. We want to find the best method which gets the balance right to deliver you a high quality message and for everyone to get their message.
  • Traversability of terrain whilst minimizing wear and tear to get the most out of each rover is a key focus area for us so wheel design and materials is a key part of our R&D.
  • More generally, many of the technologies we need already exist and only require minor developments. That includes; solar PV for energy collection, battery technology for energy storage, electromechanical robotics including electric motors, sensing including obstacle avoidance and photography, and communications.
  • Please see our website for more details in our concepts information pack.
Isn’t this just graffiti?2024-01-26T10:21:07+00:00
  • Humans have created cave art since time immemorial to celebrate knowledge and life, and to remember. The moon has no life, it is a blank canvas.
  • We believe democratising cultural access to the lunar surface is fair and an important endeavor for mankind.
  • Humans have already left their mark on the lunar surface in the form of footprints, vehicle tracks, and even the initials of astronaut Eugene Cernan’s daughter.
  • This is a tiny fraction of a percent of its surface (0.00001%). Put another way, the lunar surface is over 4 times the area of the USA and we will need less than the area of Central Park, New York.
  • The technologies we develop and their spin offs will help us here on Earth in sustainability projects through the use of robotics, battery and solar technologies. This will help us to reduce our impact on the Earth, the planet that sustains us.
When will I be able to see my message on the moon?2024-01-26T10:21:12+00:00
  • That depends upon how quickly we can sign up enough donators to make this a viable and inclusive endeavor. However, it will be measured in years, not decades.
  • Just to put things into context, there are 250 missions planned to the lunar surface with many of the solutions we need so we don’t see the development, manufacture and acquisition of launch slots as an issue.
Is making impressions in the lunar dust legal?2024-01-26T10:21:17+00:00
  • No one owns the moon but by creating a presence there it affords protection of the site (prospecting argument).
  • Impressions on the lunar surface have already been made, by landers, rovers, buggies,
    and of course by people.
  • Habitable structures and moon bases are already being planned by Governments and Corporations, we are simply extending a cultural dimension through democratizing access, making it about you and your families.
  • It is not legal for messages to be of a size where they can be observed from Earth with the unaided naked eye. We have no plans to make messages this big nor will our very small area of operation be visible this way.
How will this be paid for?2024-01-26T10:21:20+00:00
  • Message purchases with options can cover everything, though we will listen to sponsors to seek mutual benefits (you, them, all of us).
  • Trading / exchange of messages for those that wish to.
  • However, innovation is our friend and we want to crowdsource much of this.
How much will it cost per message?2024-01-26T10:21:24+00:00
  • We believe a base price of c. $999 (USD) is fair given costs of funerals in most developed nations significantly exceeds this and the average spend on a close family member on a very special occasion is in the region of $300 to $1000 (USD).
  • Scalable price plans will be available for; larger messages up to $10,000s, options for an Earth rise in the photograph, and those who also wish to have a message etched onto one of the lunar craft.
  • Donator reward scheme (please see website) will get you one lunar surface message token and one or more vehicle etching purchase opportunities.
How much will all this cost?2024-01-26T10:21:27+00:00
  • Costs per kg to the lunar surface are falling rapidly along with space access more generally.
  • Factoring the launch costs, using assumptions of rover mass and numbers, lander / command module, their R&D then production, Earth infrastructure, insurance, and the recurring cost of managing the service, it is affordable with the planned sign up numbers.
What kind of font can I have?2024-01-26T10:21:30+00:00

We are exploring a range of fonts which can offer clarity of the message whilst also being appealing and appropriate for the type of message. We’ll provide details in the future as the development progresses and involve you in that process.

What language can I have my message in?2024-01-26T10:21:34+00:00

We are initially working on English with an English character set but we hope to expand from here, subject to the complexities of introducing more character sets.

What kind of message can I have and how big?2024-01-26T10:21:38+00:00
  • Almost anything at all for a loved one or a memorial message provided it is tasteful and within reason.
  • We are working on the character count limit which will be announced as the innovations mature but they will likely be several feet across.
How long will these messages last?2024-01-26T10:21:42+00:00
  • They will likely outlast us, the human race, but will be a lasting record of our love and memories.
  • Only meteorites can naturally disturb the lunar surface but the odds of impact on our messages are miniscule. We’ll replace them if that ever happens.
