Professor Christopher J. Newman

Professor Christopher Newman is active in the teaching and research of space law and has published extensively on the legal and ethical underpinnings of space governance. He has published numerous articles exploring the interface between ethical and legal issues within space governance. Chris has co- edited a book with leading astrophysicist, Dr Richard Wilman, entitled “Frontiers of Space Risk” in which he and other authors explore the risks posed to the Earth from space and the risks to human space activity. He has presented his research to the International Institute of Space Law symposium on the regulation of UK spaceflight and to the Committee on Space Research.

In 2021 he was an observer member of the UK delegation to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS). Professor Newman is a Visiting Professor in Space Law at the Open University and an academic adviser and policy consultant to 3S Northumbria, a space situational awareness and tracking company. He is a member of the International Institute of Space Law and has made numerous TV and radio appearances in the UK speaking as an expert on space law and policy issues.
